Teia
Project overview
Teia, a company of biologists collecting animal data for their clients, approached us to develop a web application that would streamline project management.
The main pain points were slow project creation, difficulty importing collected data, and inefficient project planning processes. Our goal was to create a user-friendly solution that would speed up project creation and management, while minimizing manual tasks.
The project involved a product manager, tech lead, and a development team, with continuous collaboration from Teia’s biologists and project managers, ensuring the product met their real-world needs.
The project took 3 months to complete, starting with a research phase to understand the challenges, followed by wireframe development and prototyping. The final month focused on testing, feedback integration, and delivering the final product.
As the design lead, I handled user experience strategy, wireframing, and prototyping. I worked closely with the product manager and development team to ensure alignment between design, user needs, and technical requirements, while leading user testing and feedback sessions.
The final product streamlined Teia’s processes, reducing the time spent on manual tasks by 40% and increasing overal work efficiency with 200%+. Researchers were able to import data more efficiently, and project managers gained better visibility into project statuses, resulting in improved productivity.
Research
The research aimed to uncover the challenges faced by Teia’s biologists and project managers, ensuring that our design solution aligned with their needs and pain points.
We reviewed Teia’s existing documents and protocols to fully understand their data needs and ensure that the new product would integrate seamlessly with their workflows.
- Data collected in the field needed to be easily imported and combined in the new system.
- Protocols required the system to follow specific data structures to remain compliant with their processes.
We conducted interviews with the project manager, tech lead, and biologists to understand their current workflows and identify where the new system could bring efficiencies.
- A lot of tasks were manually done in Excel, leading to inefficiency.
- Managing large amounts of data was overwhelming and prone to errors.
- A significant amount of time was spent creating and editing project plans.
We analyzed competitor platforms to identify gaps in the market and ensure that Teia’s new application offered unique value, especially in terms of project management and data handling.
- No existing platform focused on streamlining project creation and data importation for biologists.
- Most competitors’ interfaces were outdated, and they lacked IT-specific features to support data management.
- There were no solutions offering a comprehensive and efficient way to plan and track animal research projects.
The research revealed several key insights that guided our design process for Teia. Interviews with biologists and project managers highlighted inefficiencies in data handling, project creation, and planning, with a heavy reliance on manual tasks in Excel. Analysis of existing protocols emphasized the need for seamless data importation and structure alignment. Competitor research showed a gap in the market for a user-friendly platform tailored to biologists, with most solutions lacking features to streamline project management and data integration. These findings informed the design of a web application that would simplify data management, improve workflow efficiency, and reduce manual tasks, directly addressing Teia's business needs.

Ideating Solutions
Sitemap / Information Architecture
I began by gathering all the key requirements, including project creation, research area management, and data import. Using this information, I mapped out a logical structure that placed content and features where users would expect to find them. The aim was to create a simple and intuitive interface, making it easy for users to quickly access and interact with important data such as project details and planning information. This approach formed the basis for the wireframes and prototypes, ensuring the final product was user-friendly and efficient.
Prototype
In the ideation phase, we focused on addressing key pain points identified in our research. We explored prototypes for project creation, data management, and researcher assignment. Key features like research areas, automatic data imports, and simplified project planning were prioritized to streamline workflows.
- Refined the project creation process by reducing unnecessary steps and simplifying data entry.
- Improved the calendar interface for project managers, making it easier to track researchers' availability and project status.
- Enhanced the researcher assignment feature, allowing project managers to quickly assign tasks and manage project priorities more efficiently.
